Potato protein concentrate is a co-product of potato starch manufacture. Once the starch has been separated, the potato fruit juice left behind still carries the tuber's soluble protein; that protein is recovered, concentrated and dried into the meal supplied here. Nothing is grown specifically to produce it, which is part of why it sits alongside marine protein in a formulation rather than competing with food-crop acreage for the privilege.

Formulators reach for it where a plant protein has to behave like an animal one. Its amino acid profile is unusually well balanced for a vegetable source — lysine and methionine are the two that most often limit plant proteins in marine diets — and the low fibre and ash content mean it concentrates protein without diluting the digestible energy of the finished pellet.

In practice it is a partial substitution rather than a wholesale one. It displaces a share of the marine protein while the remainder of the formulation continues to supply the long-chain fatty acids that no plant protein carries. Inclusion is set against the rest of the diet and confirmed on the analysis for the lot you are quoted, and the meal ships in 25 kg bags or 1,000 kg big bags depending on how it is dosed at the mill.
