Vital Wheat Gluten can contribute both protein and binding functionality to aquafeed. These roles should be evaluated separately: a pellet that survives handling must also meet the nutritional requirements of its intended species and life stage.
Hydration and protein functionality
Wheat gluten contains gliadin and glutenin fractions associated with its viscoelastic behavior. Hydration and processing conditions affect how the ingredient behaves in a feed mix. It is not interchangeable with wheat flour or starch simply because all originate from wheat.
The manufacturer's description supports water absorption and binding functionality, but it does not establish a guaranteed pellet durability or water-stability result for every recipe. Use the actual ingredient specification and a formulation trial to assess that result.
Extrusion and pellet testing
Record the recipe, ingredient particle size, water addition, conditioning, screw configuration and drying conditions. Select operating settings for the equipment and formulation; a universal temperature, pressure or moisture window can mislead when these change.
| Trial measurement | Keep comparable | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Pellet durability | Test method and handling conditions | Resistance to mechanical damage |
| Water stability | Water conditions and immersion method | Retention of pellet material in that test |
| Fines | Sampling point and transport system | Losses during production and delivery |
Compare binders in otherwise controlled trials. An inclusion percentage alone cannot explain performance when the recipe or extrusion settings also differ. Set acceptance criteria before testing, then retain the results with the batch and process records. The feed-ingredient catalogue supports selection of candidate materials.
Nutritional balance and digestibility
Do not treat crude protein as a complete nutritional assessment. Review amino acid supply, digestibility, minerals and the rest of the diet. Research in Atlantic salmon shows that feed processing can affect the measured nutrient value of gluten ingredients; results should retain their species and processing context.
Compare the contribution of Potato Protein Meal, Fish Meal and other ingredients using a qualified formulation assessment. Confirm the analytical basis of protein, ash and phosphorus values before comparing supplier sheets. No single digestibility percentage or inclusion rate is prescribed here for all fish and shrimp.
Water quality and purchasing decisions
Stable pellets do not remove the need to manage feeding. Consider uneaten feed, fines and nutrient loss alongside acceptance and growth in the intended system. A laboratory immersion test is useful, but it is not a direct guarantee of farm performance or reduced filtration demand.
Ask the supplier for composition, functional specifications, batch consistency, packaging and storage instructions. Run a production trial before committing to a formulation change, and document both physical and nutritional acceptance criteria. Definitions of viscoelasticity, apparent digestibility and pellet durability are available in the aquaculture glossary.
